Velox Biosystems wins the Grand Prize at the 2015 PortTech Pitch Competition

velox-winnerSAN PEDRO, CA — Three new companies, each with a sustainability solution for environmental and energy challenges in California and beyond, earned top prizes at the PortTech Pitch Finals competition in San Pedro late yesterday (Sept. 29).

The winners are: Velox Biosystems (Irvine, CA), Marvel Energy (Los Angeles, CA), and Hydrophilix (Los Angeles, CA). A panel of judges selected them from among 10 finalists, culminating a months-long tournament that began with 80 entrants. The judges determined the three winners offer the most viable business model or innovative solution for environmental and energy challenges that can benefit global commerce, cargo movement or marine ecosystems.

“These three companies show the power of creativity and entrepreneurialism as a force to build new technologies and create economic opportunity,” said Stan Tomsic, PortTech’s executive director. “We congratulate them and PortTech will continue to help them grow, first at L.A.’s port complex and then across the United States and the world,” he said.

Grand prize: Velox Biosystems ( – recognizing the startup team’s breakthrough technology and demonstrated business opportunity. Velox Biosystems has developed a one-step, culture-free method for detecting bacteria and pathogens in water in less than 60 minutes. The test is simple, efficient, and more sensitive than conventional detection methods that can take up to four days to process. Velox Biosystems has the potential to revolutionize the water industry and ensure water supplies are clean and safe. “We are thrilled to win the PortTech Pitch Grand prize award! It’s a validation of our hard work, technology and ability to build a successful business by making our simple clean water test available to the broader water management market,” said Neto Sosa, Velox Biosystems’ chief technology officer. “Participating in the Pitch coaching sessions really helped us improve our presentation, better target investors and prepare for new market opportunities.”
Best Business Model Award: Marvel Energy – for their marketing strategy and growth potential. The company has developed, built and tested an energy storage technology that makes renewable and underutilized energy available on demand, when it’s needed most.
Most Innovative Technology: Hydrophilix – for the company’s breakthrough coating technology that turns seawater and wastewater into clean water so that it can be safely used or discharged for beneficial purposes. The breakthrough coating technology has many additional applications including hospitals, the medical and pharmaceutical industries and laboratories. Winners receive mentoring, marketing consultations, business advice and access to angel investors and early-stage venture capitalists via PortTech’s business commercialization program.
