Weian Zhao, Ph.D.


Dr. Weian Zhao is an Associate Professor at the Sue and Bill Gross Stem Cell Research Center, Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Edwards Lifesciences Center for Advanced Cardiovascular Technology and Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at University of California, Irvine. Dr. Zhao is also a founder of Velox Biosystems. His research aims to to develop novel miniaturized devices for disease diagnosis and monitoring. His work has been published in top journals including Nature Communications, Nature Nanotechnology, PNAS, Blood, Neurology, Biomaterials, Lab on a Chip, JACS, Advanced Materials, and Angewandte Chemie. Dr. Zhao has received numerous awards including the NIH Director’s New Innovator Award. The Zhao laboratory is also one of the nine recipients of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health, R01 funding to support enhanced diagnostics for rapid detection of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria.


Christopher Heylman, Ph.D.


Dr. Christopher Heylman is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. Prior to joining the faculty at Cal Poly, he co-founded and served as CEO of Velox Biosystems. Dr. Heylman received his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University and worked with the early foundations of Velox’s core IC3D technology while a postdoc at the University of California, Irvine. Under the leadership of Dr. Heylman, Velox came to fruition and grew further during residences in two University of California, Irvine incubators, TechPortal at Calit2 and The Cove at Applied Innovation, where the company was able to develop the core IC3D technology, secure a license from University of California patents, expand the executive and technical team, raise multiple rounds of funding, and build their own office and laboratory in Irvine. Dr. Heylman continues to work with Velox as a technical consultant, advising on product and business development.
